The Changes in Mind about Education of Vietnamese Confucians in the Early of 20th Century (02/07/2013)

During the period of late 19th century to early 20th century, the Vietnamese Confucians saw the ideology’s crisis and the deep differentiation of resources. Firstly, it is the formation of intellectuals who love the nation and decided to leave the Nguyen Dynasty as objection to the peace policy of Imperial. They were the first Confucians who raised the Duy Tan movement in the early of the 20th century, such as: Phan Chu Trinh, Phan Boi Châu, Huynh Thuc Khang, Tran Quy Cap, Luong Van Can, Nguyen Thuong Hien… They escaped the system of former competition – examinations or feudal bureaucratic system even passing the examination, so that they can protect their real position in society. They started implementing their ideas without any dependence on the feudal dynasty. Different from the Confucians in previous period, in the 20th century, Duy Tan Confucians started the changes in mind by looking over to the neighbor countries or within area to make evaluation as well as learn from them. They absorbed the ideas of reformation of Vietnamese, Japanese and Chinese seniors then learned the independent idea of Western countries. Author would like to clarify these changes in mind about education through this article by reviewing education’s role, purpose, objects as well as concepts.
