09/10/2026
Hoa Hao Buddhism was founded in 1939 in Hoa Hao village, Tan Chau district, Chau Doc province (currently Phu My town, Phu Tan district, An Giang province) by Prophet Huynh Phu So. Throughout its formation and development, driven by the spirit of reciprocating the Four Debts of Gratitude (Tu An) and active worldly engagement, Hoa Hao Buddhism has made significant contributions to the overall societal development of the Southern region. In the current context, Hoa Hao Buddhism faces numerous opportunities to propagate its religious moral values, while simultaneously encountering various challenges arising from social transformation. Employing the approaches of Religious Studies and the Anthropology of Religion, this paper examines the trajectory from belief perception to religious practice among Hoa Hao Buddhist followers in An Giang and its neighboring areas. The study aims to elucidate the internal dynamics within the adherent community as well as the impacts of external factors on this community, based on this, it provides recommendations and pathways for sustainable development in the short and long term.
