The tale titled “Khai thiên, Trấn quốc, Trung phụ, Tá dực Đại vương” in the book “Việt điện u linh” (The Compilation of the Departed Spirits of the Viet Realm) tells the story of the tutelary earth deity of Đằng Châu area (now part of Hưng Yên Province), who is identified as Phạm Phòng Át, also known as Phạm Bạch Hổ. Before ascending the throne, Prince Khai Minh (Lê Long Đĩnh) often went sailing through this region and visited the local temple dedicated to the deity. Impressed by the deity’s sacred power, he decided to test it by praying for a strange sign: that “half the river would have rain while the other half remained dry”. The prayer was miraculously fulfilled. In admiration of the deity’s power, Prince Khai Minh ordered the temple to be restored, and the local people revered and worshipped the deity even more. After the death of Emperor Lê Đại Hành in 1005, Prince Khai Minh came to the temple to seek a prophetic dream. A mysterious figure appeared and recited a poem foretelling five years of success and peace. After becoming emperor, Lê Long Đĩnh renamed Đằng Châu as Thái Bình Prefecture and bestowed upon the deity the title Khai thiên Thành hoàng Đại vương. During the Trần dynasty, the deity continued to be honored with additional exalted titles: Trấn quốc, Trung phụ, and Tá dực.
